Over the last decade, we have worked with many in-service and pre-service language teachers, sharing our passion for how to teach grammar effectively in diverse contexts. The idea of teaching descriptive grammar using both corpus tools and communicative tasks arose in the pedagogical grammar seminars that Casey Keck took with Douglas Biber, Lourdes Ortega and Randi Reppen at Northern Arizona University. We are indebted to both Lourdes Ortega and John Norris for encouraging us to write a practical resource book for those who are interested in the teaching and learning of grammar. We are also grateful for the valuable feedback provided by Luke Plonsky, David Olsher, Randi Reppen, and Ute Römer on early drafts of the manuscript. Special thanks go to Kees Vaes, who has provided amazing support and guidance during the entire process.
Our students have been the greatest resource for this book. Without our wonderful students at San Francisco State University (SFSU), Boise State University (BSU), and Georgia State University (GSU), this work would not have been possible. We are also grateful for the support of our SFSU, BSU, and GSU colleagues. Finally, we thank our families, who have always respected our passion for applied linguistics and have provided us with endless support and love.
