This paper provides social and historical background information on Cumbria and Carlisle as well as an overview of dialectological studies conducted in Cumbria, mainly in the first half of the twentieth century. A synopsis of Carlisle English features is presented and examples of dialect levelling in this variety are given. Furthermore, the dialect contact situation of Carlisle English with Newcastle English is discussed with regard to the variable /h/.
