This article analyzes the reference-tracking and pragmatic functions of switch-reference marking in Kotiria (Wanano, East Tukano), building on previous studies (Longacre 1983), more recent analyses and description of the language, as well as extensive investigation of textual data. It offers an overview of Kotiria complex sentences, pinpointing the structural context for explicit switch-reference marking, discusses switch-reference marking in ‘tail-head’ linkage constructions, and examines the interaction of switch-reference marking with other means of participant reference identification in discourse: use of pronouns, definite lexical NPs, and nouns marked by the ‘contrastive subject’ suffix -se’e. It shows that Kotiria switch-reference has interacting reference-tracking and pragmatic discourse functions, and proposes a reformulated view of the overall organization of the system.
