Chapter 10Development of morphosyntax by young Korean heritage language speakers

Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of Korean heritage language (HL) acquisition by children in
early childhood, with special emphasis on Korean morphology and syntax development, areas of grammar that are shown to
be vulnerable in HLs. The chapter navigates the reader through definitions and methodologies in child HL acquisition.
The core of this chapter presents current contributions, including my own research, in three distinct areas of
linguistic development of Korean as a heritage language: nominal morphology, verbal morphology, and syntax, as well as
insight from research on the structure of Korean-English code mixing. Finally, the chapter emphasizes shifting from a
deficit view of HL acquisition to one that is asset-based, showcasing heritage children’s linguistic abilities and
strategies.
