Retranslation of Children's Books as Evidence of Changes of Norms

Abstract
By comparing translations and retranslations of several children's books into Hebrew done over a span of 70 years we try to find out what linguistic and translational norms prevailed at different periods and what changes occurred in these norms, in a framework of the changing historical, cultural and linguistic situation. In recent years there has been a growing tension between the acceptability of the "commissioners" and that of the "customer"—the child. This study found that recent retranslations tend to lower the high literary style customary in previous translations and comply with up-to-date linguistic norms. This concurs with a tendency to put "readability" as a central issue.
Résumé
Une comparaison de traductions et retraductions en hébreu de plusieurs livres pour enfants, échelonnées sur une période de 70 années, permet de distinguer les normes linguistiques et traductives qui ont prévalu à des moments différents; l'évolution de ces normes est mise en rapport avec une évolution plus générale sur lesplans historique, culturel et linguistique. On a depuis peu observé une tension croissante entre les critères d'acceptabilité maniés par les "donneurs d'ordre" et par les "consommateurs", à savoir les enfants. L'étude montre que des retraductions récentes tendent à mitiger le style élevé caractéristique de celles qui précèdent, en se conformant davantage à des normes linguistiques modernes. La tendance rejoint celle qui met en avant le principe de "lisibilité".
