A Framework for Decision-Making in Translation

Abstract
Decision-making in translation amounts to an information-processing concept that describes decision-making behaviour in terms of an interaction between the translator's cognitive system; his linguistic, referential, sociocultural and situational knowledge bases; the task specification; and the texttype-specific problem space. All four factors together enable the translator to build up an internal problem representation which, once constructed, will profoundly influence the translator's subsequent decision-making performance, taking account of probability ratings which are an important element in many translational decision-making settings.
Résumé
La prise de décision en traduction relève d'un concept de traitement d'information qui définit la prise de décision comme une interaction entre le système cognitif du traducteur, les bases de son savoir linguistique, référentiel, socioculturel et situationnel, la description de sa tâche, et les difficultés propres au type textuel. Les quatre facteurs permettent au traducteur de se constituer une représentation interne des problèmes: celle-ci influencera ses prises de décision subséquentes, en ce qu'elle tiendra compte des estimations de probabilité qui jouent un rôle important dans le processus de prise de décision en traduction.
