Translation Policy and Literary/Cultural Changes in Early Modern Korea (1895-1921)

Abstract
This article gives an overview of the relationship between the establishment of translation policy and literary/cultural shifts during the first two decades of the twentieth century in Korea. During the Kae Hwa ("Enlightenment") period, 1895-1910, translations were undertaken primarily for didactic purposes. Next followed a period when foreign texts were imported with the aim of developing modern Korean literature. The concept of "translational norms", as proposed by Toury, is used to explain the changing practices of individual translators as well as the general evolution of translation within the Korean literary system.
Résumé
Cet article donne un aperçu du rapport entre la formulation d'une politique concernant la traduction et les changements littéraires et culturels desdeux premières décennies du vingtième siècle en Corée. Pendant la période KaeHwa ("la période des lumières"), 1895-1910, les traducteurs visaient surtout àinstruire. Ensuite il y avait une période d'importation des textes dans le but detransformer le système littéraire coréen. En utilisant la théorie des normes tra-ductrices de Toury nous avons décrit les glissements qui se sont produits au ni-veau des procédés employés par les traducteurs, aussi bien que les transforma-tions globales du système littéraire coréen.
