Do embodiment and situatedness really make a difference?

This article provides a brief presentation of the development of some cognitive scientific views on technical communication and translation. I look in detail at one of the latest cognitive scientific trends, namely Situated and Embodied Cognition. According to this approach, humans are creative beings who are dependent on their physical and psychological circumstances. I provide a brief overview of the background to situated, embodied cognition, present some of its main concepts and conclude with a number of proposals about how findings in this field can be used to further develop research in Technical Communication and Translation Studies. In doing so, I argue that the new findings in cognitive science will necessarily change some of the common concepts and methodological traditions with regard to the actual text production process and competencies.
Résumé
L‘article présente en bref l‘évolution d‘une série de conceptions développées dans la science cognitive en rapport avec la communication technique et la traduction. J‘examine de près une des tendances cognitives récentes en la matière, à savoir la cognition située et incarnée. Selon l‘approche en question, l‘être humain fait partie des espèces pourvues de pouvoir créateur et conditionnées par les circonstances physiques et psychologiques. Je fournis un bref aperçu du cadre général de la cognition située et incarnée, ensuite j‘analyse une série des concepts-clefs en la matière, pour finir par quelques propositions sur la manière d‘exploiter les développements dans cette discipline en vue de recherches ultérieures dans la Communication Technique et dans la Recherche sur la Traduction. Dans une telle perspective, je soutiens que les vues nouvelles dues aux sciences cognitives auront un impact inévitable sur les concepts courants ainsi que sur les traditions méthodologiques relatives au processus et aux compétences de la production textuelle.
