Resistance and non-resistance to boundary crossing in translation research

Ideas, concepts, theories and methods spread within and across disciplines, communities, countries and traditions. Richard Dawkins, Richard. 1976. The selfish gene. Oxford: Oxford University Press. has suggested that memes (units of cultural transmission) are in competition for survival, and that in some situations of stability it is difficult for a new meme to invade. My interest is in concepts, theories and methods in academia, and the fact that these memes have more or less difficulty in spreading. They encounter more or less resistance in jumping boundaries, whether those boundaries are disciplinary or boundaries constituted by national research traditions. The aim of my paper is to discuss the spread of ideas, and situations of resistance and non-resistance to the spread of ideas, taking as examples three cases of boundary-crossing research projects in Translation Research. I shall suggest through those examples how resistance may be overcome.
Résumé
Des idées, des concepts, des théories et des méthodes se répandent au sein même des disciplines, des communautés, des pays et des traditions, mais aussi au-delà de toutes ces frontières. Richard Dawkins (1976 : 214) estime que les mèmes (des unités de transmission culturelle) sont en concurrence vitale et qu’un nouveau mème pénètre difficilement dans certaines situations de stabilité. Mon intérêt va aux concepts, aux théories et aux méthodes en vigueur dans le monde académique ainsi qu’au fait que ces mèmes s’y propagent assez difficilement. En transgressant des frontières, ils se heurtent dans une certaine mesure à des résistances, qu’il s’agisse de frontières entre disciplines ou de frontières constituées par des traditions de recherche nationale. L’objectif de mon article est d’examiner la diffusion des idées et les situations de résistance ou de non-résistance face à la diffusion de ces dernières. En me référant à trois projets de recherche sur la transgression des frontières dans les études de traduction, je me propose également de montrer comment vaincre ces résistances.
