'Die Seefahrt an den Nagel hängen'?

Le présent article se donne pour objectif d'aborder sur trois plans différents la question de la métaphore. La première partie offre une brève esquisse des progrès accomplis par notre connaissance du phénomène. Il est montré que ce savoir s'est développé grâce à l'inclusion d'une série de composants qui l'ont en même temps considérablement complexifié. La seconde partie se réfère à des traductions allemandes de textes espagnols et français, témoignant ainsi des di-verses manières possibles de traduire les métaphores. Les solutions proposées par les traducteurs sont comparées entre elles et sont ensuite évaluées. Cette procédure forme la base d'une troisième partie, consacrée à l'examen des consquences de tout ce qui précède pour la science de la traduction. Quelle place y est faite à la métaphore? Comment peut-elle être intégrée de façon systematique à la discipline?

This contribution attempts to address the problem of metaphor on three different levels. In the first part a short sketch of the development of our understanding of metaphors is presented. It is shown that this understanding has expanded by the successive inclusion of a number of components, rendering it increasingly more complex. The second part proceeds from the translation of Spanish and French texts into German, and documents the various possibilities for translating metaphors. The particular solutions supplied by the translators are compared with one another and evaluated. This procedure forms the basis for the third part, which investigates the possible consequences of all this for the science of translation: what status do metaphors have in this science, and in what way could they possibly be systematically integrated into research in the field?
