A corpus-based study of the verb observar in English-Spanish translations of biomedical research articles

This paper describes an empirical contextual study of the English verbs and syntactic resources translated by observar in an extensive corpus of biomedical research articles. Quantitative analysis showed that the frequency of observar was significantly higher in the Spanish translations than in the comparable Spanish language original articles (360 vs. 162 instances; P < 0·001). Qualitative analysis of the Spanish native texts provided a linguistic profile for the verb. This profile was then used in a contextual study to assess the appropriateness of the 360 instances found in the translated texts. The results indicate that observar is only a natural translation equivalent for ‘observe’. For other verbs, an awareness both of the rhetorical, syntactic and collocational restrictions and of the range of alternative choices will allow translators to select appropriate lexical items and avoid excessive repetition of observar, thus creating a more varied target text.

Cet article se réfère à une étude contextuelle de type empirique portant sur les verbes et ressources syntaxiques anglais rendus par observar ; le corpus est constitué d’un vaste ensemble d’articles ayant trait à la recherche en biomédecine. Des analyses quantitatives ont montré que la fréquence de observar était nettement plus élevée dans les traductions espagnoles que dans les articles comparables en espagnol, langue originale (306 vs. 162 occurrences ; P < 0∙001). Des analyses qualitatives de textes originaux espagnols ont procuré le profil linguistique du verbe. Ce profil a ensuite été employé dans une étude contextuelle afin d’évaluer l’adéquation des 360 occurrences trouvées dans les textes traduits. Les résultats indiquent que observar est la traduction naturelle équivalente de ‘observer’. Pour d’autres verbes, la conscience aussi bien des restrictions rhétoriques, syntaxiques et collocatives que de la gamme des alternatives permettra aux traducteurs de choisir des items lexicaux appropriés et d’éviter les répétitions excessives de observar, produisant ainsi un texte-cible plus varié.
