Taking the pun by the horns

Taking my starting-point in Maria Tymoczko’s claim (1999) that syntagmatic elements in texts present the greatest challenges to translators and readers of translations, I want to argue that literary translators and translation scholars need to pay greater attention to clusters of wordplay rather than distinguishing puns as individual, separate brain-teasers. Hence, more is at stake in the translation of wordplay than just trying to transfer the source text complexities into the target language. Historical, social and other contextual and intertextual factors must also be taken into consideration. My case in point is an examination of the transfer of highly challenging networks of puns in James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922)Joyce, James 1922/1934. Ulysses. New York: Random House. into Danish and German. The theoretical frame of reference is a discussion of puns in the critical works of Dirk Delabastita, Jonathan Culler, Derek Attridge and Patricia Parker followed by a critique of translator and critic Frank Heibert’s methods of evaluating the German translations.

Manchester: St. Jerome. , selon laquelle ce sont surtout les éléments syntagmatiques d’un texte qui posent des problèmes aux traducteurs comme aux lecteurs de traductions, je soutiens que les traducteurs littéraires ainsi que les chercheurs devraient davantage porter leur attention sur des réseaux de jeux de mots plutôt que sur ces derniers pris séparement et traités comme autant de casse-têtes. Aussi la traduction des jeux de mots ne consiste-t-elle pas seulement à transposer les complexités d’un texte-source dans la langue-cible. Elle doit également prendre en compte des facteurs historiques, sociaux, contextuels et intertextuels. J’examinerai en l’occurrence le transfert en danois et en allemand de réseaux problématiques de jeux de mots figurant dans Ulysses (1922) de James Joyce. Le cadre de référence théorique est constitué par les études de Dirk Delabastita, Jonathan Culler, Derek Attridge et Patricia Parker ; il est suivi d’une critique des méthodes mises au point par le traducteur et critique Frank Heibert pour évaluer les traductions allemandes.
