Tailoring Translation Programs to Social Needs

Abstract
To ensure that translation programs meet the constantly changing needs of the market, it is of paramount importance to first identify what those needs are. This article reports on a data-based study of professional translators undertaken in Hong Kong. The study reveals that recent social-political changes in the country have brought about changes in the needs of professional translators characterized by demand for better bilingual competence including mastery of Putonghua, better command of selective translation and more collaborative translation. It was also found that training in English and Chinese proved most helpful to professional translators at work, whereas training in interpretation and subject knowledge proved inadequate. The author recommends that training in L1 and L2 be strengthened, and translation teaching be brought closer to the real world through authentic training, thus responding to changing social needs.
Résumé
Les besoins changeants du marché de la traduction appellent un réajustement constant des programmes de formation; aussi faut-il identifier en premier lieu ces besoins. Une étude portant sur des traducteurs professionnels de Hong Kong révèle que les récents changements socio-politiques du pays requièrent de nouvelles aptitudes: une meilleure compétence bilingue (en plus d’une maîtrise du Putonghua), une meilleure maîtrise de la traduction sélective, et un développement du travail en commun. Il fut également établi qu’une formation en anglais et en chinois avançait considérablement le travail des traducteurs professionnels, tandis que la formation en interprétation et en savoirs disciplinaires s’avérait inadéquate. L’auteur recommande la formation intensifiée en L1 et L2, ainsi que le resserrement des liens entre l’enseignement de la traduction et le monde réel, au moyen d’une formation authentique qui correspond aux besoins changeants de la société.
