Register- und Varietätenindikatoren als Gegenstand metadiskursiver Reflexion—literarische Sinndimension und Übersetzungsproblematik

Dans la littérature traductologique les problèmes posés par les phénomènes dits "métalinguistiques" sont traités d'une manière peu systématique. A partir de plusieurs exemples cueillis du roman The Thanatos Syndrome de Walker Percy et sa traduction allemande, les auteurs proposent une différenciation conceptuelle de ces phénomènes, qui cherche à mieux saisir leur apport stylistique dans le cadre de la texture significative d'une oeuvre littéraire, et à fournir une approche plus approfondie à la discussion des problèmes spécifiques de traduction que posent ces phénomènes.

"Metalinguistic" phenomena have occasionally been identified as posing specific translation problems. These phenomena are however more variegated than their discussion in the literature on translation might lead one to suppose. The article looks at examples taken from Walker Percy's novel The Thanatos Syndrome and its German translation with a view to proposing some necessary differentiations that attempt (a) to do justice to the way in which these phenomena constitute a stylistic dimension of their own and represent an important strand in the overall texture and literary meaning o f a work of fiction, and (b) to provide a basis for appropriate discussion of the specific translation problems posed by these phenomena.
