Theoretical and methodological issues in language contact and change

The case of English influence on Italian stare + gerund

Abstract
This chapter revisits the hypothesis that contact with English is among the causes of the expansion of the Italian progressive verb periphrasis stare ‘stand’ + gerund. Within a multicausal theory of language change, I argue that there has so far been no comprehensive and methodologically appropriate assessment of this hypothesis, and after a detailed discussion of the historical and sociolinguistic features of contact between Italian and English I provide a quantitative analysis of a new set of linguistic data based on a more varied selection of texts than previously attempted. The evidence presented in this chapter suggests that English influence has had a limited role, at best, in the expansion of the Italian progressive.
