Acknowledgments

My involvement with clitics started more than two decades ago (while I was a doctoral student working on an entirely different topic); initially, I wanted to write a single paper covering the basics of Serbian 2P clitic linear placement within the Meaning-Text approach to language, using, in the realm of syntax, the strictly dependency formalism. But then the subject grew on me and I ended up publishing and/or presenting several papers on various aspects of Serbian clitics. This monograph represents a “face lift” and a synthesis of these. While my thinking about clitics has evolved over time, the main conclusions have remained.

I should like to thank, first and foremost, Igor Mel’čuk and Wayles Browne for good discussions and guidance they kindly provided over the years, as well as for reading and commenting on the prefinal version of this monograph.
