Abstract
This chapter reviews the three types of relations of negation with linguistic expressions. Items are in focus, or out of focus and in scope, or out of scope of negation. Out of scope is characteristic of positive polarity items, yet their relation to negation is modified in activated, discourse-old propositions. Thus of also in the direct scope of clausal negation, as demonstrated by this corpus study. A PPI being part of an activated proposition over which the negation ranges as a whole makes it unnecessary to compute an unavailable interpretation for the relation between the negative and the PPI. The significance of the work is to show the extensive intervention of activation for the interpretation of negation.
