This paper examines an anomaly in Turkish with respect to licensing the neg projection in the (postpositional) temporal adjunct clause -(y)AlI (beri) which expresses duration (Özsoy 2004, Arslan-Kechriotis 2006). The paper argues that any formalism that would account for negated constructions should take into consideration the interaction between tense, aspect, modality and negation as well as verbal semantics. It is only when this interaction is taken into consideration that the formalism will be able to account for the difference in the licensing of the affirmative -(y)AlI (beri) clause and its negative counterpart -mA-yAlI (beri) in a Turkish sentence.
