On the typology of ancient grammars

In my study I explore three approaches to noun declensions in ancient grammar. The most popular ancient grammar, Donatus’ Ars minor, adheres to a purely descriptive method, which consists in quoting a chosen headword and giving its full morphological paradigm. The second approach presents the case forms as being based on the genitive singular endings of the five declensions. I will argue that these two approaches were the outcome of the third approach, the regulae-method, which originated in the study of analogy in the early stages of Latin grammar. This heuristic method was originally designed as a discovery procedure for native speakers to account for the facts of their mother tongue.
