On the concept of grammatical tradition and its application to linguistic studies in Brazil

The concept of tradition dates back to the origins of human language studies in Classical Antiquity. It stems from the idea that there is an imperative connection between being traditional and belonging to the set of classical oeuvres that are in the cradle of linguistic thinking. On the other hand, it is not uncommon to find oeuvres in the contemporary production that can be characterized as traditional seminal works or that are introductory to a certain paradigm, no matter how recent they may be. This paper seeks to contribute to the clarification of the polysemic value the term ‘tradition’ has in the field of linguistic science, with a special reference to the meaning it holds within Brazilian linguistic studies.
