Abstract
In this chapter, we outline the contributions of
Ellen Bialystok to our understanding of the effects of bilingualism
on cognition and how these contributions have inspired research on
bilingual education. We discuss how her work on cognitive impacts of
bilingualism and bilingual education have contributed to and fueled
research investigating academic achievement and learning across
languages for both majority-language speakers learning a target
language and minority-language speakers learning the
majority-language. We conclude with the next steps and new questions
that have arisen in this area of research and the implications for
education.
