Resumen
El significado de en-foco propuesto para las formas que la tradición llama pronombres personales en español nos permite entender su aparición en situaciones de correferencia. En este trabajo se demuestra que, en dichos contextos, el pronombre aparece cuando asoma en el contexto un competidor focal, un participante que podría erigirse en nuevo tema discursivo en situaciones en las que el hablante quiere mantener el mismo tema. El significado de en-foco pone sobre aviso al receptor para que preste especial atención a este tema discursivo que el hablante quiere sostener a pesar de la presencia del competidor. Son así los contextos correferentes sin competidor los únicos en que predomina la omisión del pronombre.
Abstract
Stabilizing discourse topics: A strategy of use of subject personal pronouns in contexts of coreference in Spanish
It is well known that so-called subject pronouns in Spanish are less likely to appear in conditions of co-reference. This paper offers an explanation for the appearance of these forms in such cases, by showing that the proposed meaning of the pronouns, in-focus, accounts for this distribution. In conditions of co-reference, the pronouns are used only when there emerges in the discourse a focal competitor, a participant that could become the new topic of discourse in situations when the speaker wants the old topic to continue. The meaning in-focus alerts the hearer to pay special attention to the discourse topic that the speaker intends to maintain, despite the presence of a competitor. It is thus only the condition of same reference with no competitor that leads to the absence of a pronoun.
