This book is the result of research begun in 2014 on the reception of Shakespeare in Italy over a longer time-span than the one presented here. Collaborative work has in fact suggested a different frame from the original one, and I warmly thank all fellow authors for their commitment to the project and patience in pursuing it. My gratitude also goes to Enrico Giaccherini for his constant advice, as well as to the colleagues of the Skenè Research Centre at the University of Verona, for their support, and, in particular, to Susan Payne, for her friendship and encouragement. A special thank also goes to the editors of this series, and in particular to Dirk Delabastita and Keith Gregor, for believing in this project from the start and greatly contributing to the way the book looks now. No less grateful am I to the two anonymous reviewers for their precious comments and suggestions. Finally, I would also like to thank the archivists of the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, where I spent several days working on the documents of theatrical censorship in the 1930s.
