Parallel corpora and translation history

In search of ideology in translated texts via the use of anchor terms

Abstract
Corpora and the linguistic analyses that can be carried out with them are of great benefit when exploring different aspects of translation history today (Gómez Castro, 2021). The aim of this contribution is to present a search resource devised by the TRACE research group for corpus-based studies of ideological manipulation in translations. This resource is designed to search aligned texts with corpus software using lists of “anchor terms”. In this case, the anchor terms are lexical items that represent key problematic topics under Franco’s regime. This chapter illustrates the use of anchor terms through case studies of theatre and narrative translations. Establishing such an inventory means a step forward in the study of translated discourse for this kind of research and has proved its usefulness in mapping translation history.
