This volume is testament to the unique and decades-long collaboration
between David Kaufer and Suguru Ishizaki. That collaboration has produced not only a
significant body of research but also a generative and generously-shared suite of
tools, which makes our work, and the work of future scholars, possible. There is
also a long list of people who helped us realize our vision for this volume. Norbert
Elliot, whose patience is only matched by his incisiveness, mentored us through the
editing process. Cody Januszko kept us all on track as drafts were being shared and
revised with his energy and keen eye. Richard Branscomb rescued us from our title
indecision. The material and intellectual support of our colleagues in Carnegie
Mellon English Department have helped to catalyze and to sustain not only this
volume, but also the entire DocuScope project. Special thanks to our editors and
John Benjamins, Ute Römer and Kees Vaes, for their belief in the volume and for
their guidance. Finally, the volume would not have been possible without our
reviewers and our extraordinary slate of contributors. We are endlessly grateful to
be a part of such a creative, kind, and insightful scholarly community.
