This volume is inspired by the pre-conference workshop Register Approaches to Language Variation and Change in
English(es), held at the ICAME 40 conference (University of Neuchâtel, 1–5 June 2019). Both the workshop and the
volume were possible due to the help of a great many people. Beginning with the workshop itself, we are grateful to all the
participants for their inspiring and stimulating presentations on register variation: Edward Finegan and Benjamin Lee (University of
Southern California), Stefania Degaetano-Ortlieb (University of Saarland), Claudia Lange (University of Dresden), Paula
Rodríguez-Puente (University of Oviedo), Tove Larsson and Magali Paquot (University of Louvain), Randi Reppen (Northern Arizona
University), Stella Neumann and Stefan Evert (University of Aachen), Javier Pérez-Guerra (University of Vigo), Alexandra Engel,
Benedikt Szmrecsanyi, Freek Van de Velde and Jason Grafmiller (University of Leuven), and Doug Biber, Jesse Egbert and Daniel Keller
(Northern Arizona University). We are also grateful to the audience for their input during the workshop.
The current volume includes a selection of the workshop presentations and also some additional chapters by authors working on
register variation, namely Yolande Botha and Maryka van Zyl, Turo Hiltunen, Melanie Röthlisberger, and Valentin Werner. The volume
would not have been possible without the excellent work and cooperation of all the authors: it has been a pleasure working with you
all, and we look forward to further cooperation in the future. We are also greatly indebted to the following colleagues who acted as
anonymous external peer reviewers and provided generous feedback: Shlomo Argamon, Tony Berber Sardinha, Lise Fontaine, Bethany Gray,
Ulrike Gut, Anu Lehto, Minna Nevala, Bety Ramsaj, Randi Reppen, Shelley Staples and Freek Van de Velde.
Our gratitude is also due to Ute Römer, the series editor, for her commitment to this project and her constant help and
valuable feedback, as well as to all the editorial staff at John Benjamins, especially Kees Vaes. Thank you all for making the project
such an enjoyable and positive experience.
For generous financial support, we would like to express our gratitude to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness
(grant FFI2014-53930-P) and the Regional Government of Galicia (grant ED431C 2017/50).
