This volume brings together selected papers from the Thirty-Third Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics that was held at the University of Toronto on April 5–7, 2019. We are grateful to the generous support of our sponsors: Arabic Linguistics Society; Canadian Linguistics Association; Centre for French and Linguistics, UTSC; Department of French Studies; Department of Historical and Cultural Studies, UTSC; Department of Language Studies, UTM; Department of Linguistics; Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations; Department of Spanish and Portuguese Faculty of Arts and Science; Institute of Islamic Studies; Jackman Humanities Institute, and the Office of the Vice-Principal Research, UTSC.
We wish to extend special thanks to our reviewers for their assistance with the large number of abstracts we received and for helping us select submissions of the highest quality for presentation at the Symposium. The papers that were submitted to this volume were also selected based on a rigorous anonymous peer-review process. As such, only eight papers were accepted for final publication. The production of this volume took place under less-than-ideal conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are grateful to the authors for their cooperation, patience, and grace during the multiple phases of the review process. We are grateful to the Arabic Linguistics Society board for facilitating the process, and to the series editors, Enam Al Wer and Elabbas Benmamoun, for their review of the entire volume.
