Phraseological modifications in Sepúlveda’s The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly

Abstract
Phraseological modification (PM) is a recurrent stylistic resource in specific types of texts, mainly journalistic texts, advertisements and literature. Since literary works are complete texts, the analysis of PM in these texts can go beyond the mere identification of the changes that the units have undergone, facilitating, in turn, the exploration of their stylistic effects. This paper explores the use of PM in a fable written by Luis Sepúlveda, The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly. The aim is to determine the extra value that modifications bring to the text by finding out not only the number and types of units modified but also the effects achieved. The results show that the author’s choice of phraseological units (PUs) and modification procedures is not arbitrary. In this text, PM directly relates to distinctive features of fables, namely the humanisation of animals and humour, providing new semantic and symbolic dimensions absent in other fables which lack this pervasive use of modifications. Creative PU variation takes animal humanisation a step further by anthropomorphising animals and distancing them from humans at the same time. This, in turn, sustains the moral lessons of the story.
Resumen
Las modificaciones fraseológicas en: Historia de una gaviota y el gato que le enseñó a volar de Luis Sepúlveda
La modificación fraseológica (MF) es un recurso estilístico recurrente en determinados tipos textuales (p. ej., textos periodísticos, anuncios y literatura). Puesto que las obras literarias constituyen textos completos, el análisis de las MF en estos textos puede ir más allá de la identificación de los cambios que las unidades han experimentado explorando los efectos estilísticos que exhiben. Este artículo analiza el uso de la MF en una fábula de Luis Sepúlveda, Historia de una gaviota y el gato que le enseñó a volar. El objetivo es determinar el valor extra que las modificaciones suponen para el texto hallando el número y los tipos de unidades modificadas, así como los efectos estilísticos. Los resultados muestran que la elección de las unidades fraseológicas y de los procedimientos modificadores no es arbitraria. En este texto, la MF apunta hacia rasgos distintivos de las fábulas, a saber, la humanización de los animales y el humor, proporcionando nuevas dimensiones semánticas y simbólicas ausentes en las fábulas que no incluyen este uso conspicuo de MF. La variación creativa de las unidades fraseológicas replantea la humanización de los animales, antropomorfizando los animales pero distanciándolos de los humanos a la misma vez, construyendo así el mensaje moral de la historia.
