Online follow-ups as evaluative reactions to two visits of the Argentinian president to the United States

The purpose of this contribution is to present the results of a study that looks at the online follow-ups produced as reactions to a series of different speech activities carried out by the president of Argentina during her visit to the USA in September 2012. Through the analysis of a corpus made up of 200 postings published in Spanish in different Internet forums and blogs, we look at some of the linguistic resources exploited by the participants to show either agreement or disagreement with the president’s statements in her public addresses, with her government’s overall performance, and with the ideas expressed by other online participants. The functional meaning of utterances, the lexico-grammatical and semantic characteristics as well as the discourse resources which contribute to meaning making are qualitatively examined from a socio-pragmatic perspective, and on the basis of Appraisal Theory (Martin and White 2005) and the study of projection, both developed within the Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory. This investigation allowed us to identify the linguistic strategies favoured by the participants to make evaluative judgments and to introduce other voices into this type of computer-mediated communication.
