Abstract
The aim of this article is to suggest and exemplify how the Shetland Norn Hildina ballad, collected on the island of Foula in 1774, might best be edited for the interested layman, in particular the interested Shetlander. The circumstances in which the ballad was recorded are briefly rehearsed, different ways in which the material could be edited are discussed, and previous studies and translations of the ballad are considered. Finally, stanzas 1 and 29 are given a detailed examination intended to point the way towards a full edition of the type suggested.
