Global, glocal or local?
The construction of a new identity by peripheral social sciences and humanities journals through translation-mediated bilingual publishing

Abstract
Local (peripheral) social sciences and humanities journals are underrepresented in major indexes due to
linguistic, ideological, and disciplinary bias. To seek international visibility without sacrificing their local identity, they
are adopting translation-mediated bilingual publishing to construct a new identity. Since bilingual publishing is a new trend,
what identity is being constructed is rarely investigated. This article aims to explore the linguistic, content, and communicated
identity of those journals. Content analysis was used to review the language policies (websites, article abstracts, and full
articles), the composition of editorial teams, pools of contributors, instructions to authors, journal overviews, and website
logos or journal covers of sixty-eight peripheral social sciences and humanities journals. The results indicate that the majority
are attempting to construct a glocal identity, a hybrid identity to maintain their unique status as a local journal and
simultaneously strive for better recognition in the international community. Another finding is that the journals are divided in
terms of communicated identity, causing obstacles to the successful construction of a new identity. This study provides evidence
on the construction of a glocal identity by bilingually published peripheral journals and has implications for the strategic use
of linguistic and non-linguistic resources in identity construction.

由于在语言、意识形态、学科等方面所受偏见,人文社科领域本土期刊被大型数据库收录的几率较低。为了提升国际知名度,同时保持区域期刊的身份,部分本土期刊通过学术翻译实施双语出版的语言政策,建构新的期刊身份。由于期刊双语出版是新兴事物,双语出版期刊的身份建构少有研究。本研究旨在分析人文社科领域双语出版期刊的语言身份、内容身份、传达身份。研究人员对六十八本双语出版本土期刊的网站语言、文章摘要语言、文章全文语言、编委会构成、作者构成、投稿者须知、期刊简介、网站标志、期刊封面进行了内容分析。结果显示,绝大部分双语出版期刊正在建构新的全球-本土双重身份,既可以保持本土期刊的特性,又可以提升国际认可度;本研究发现双语出版期刊在传达身份方面不一致,不利于其新身份的建构。本研究为双语出版期刊的全球-本土双重身份建构提供了有力证据,为本土期刊使用语言、非语言资源建构新身份提供了参考。
Resumo
Lokaj (periferiaj) socisciencaj kaj humansciencaj revuoj estas subreprezentataj en ĉefaj indeksoj pro
lingva, ideologia kaj disciplina antaŭjuĝado. Cele al internacia videblo sen perdo de loka idento, ili alprenas traduke peratan
dulingvan publikigon por krei novan identon. Ĉar dulingva publikigo konsistigas novan tendencon, oni malofte pridemandas la
karakterizojn de tiu idento. La nuna artikolo celas esplori la lingvan, enhavan kaj komunikatan identon de tiuj revuoj. Oni
aplikis enhavanalizon por esplori la lingvan politikon (retejojn, artikolajn resumojn, kaj plenajn artikolojn), konsiston de
redaktaj teamoj, rezervujojn de kontribuantoj, instrukciojn al aŭtoroj, suerrigardojn de revuoj, kaj retejajn logotipojn aŭ
revuajn kovrilojn, de sesdek ok periferiaj socisciencaj kaj humansciencaj revuoj. La rezultoj indikas, ke la plimulto celas
konstrui loke globan, do hibridan, identon, por daŭrigi sian unikan statuson kiel loka revuo, dum ili samtempe celas pli bonan
rekonon en la internacia medio. Plia eltrovo estas tio, ke revuoj estas dividitaj rilate sian komunikatan identon, kio obstaklas
la sukcesan konstruon de nova idento. La studo liveras atestaĵojn pri la konstruo de loke globa idento fare de dulingve aperigataj
periferiaj revuoj kaj montras implicojn por la strategia utiligo de lingvaj kaj nelingvaj rimedoj en konstruado de idento.
