This book has been in the making for quite some time, dating to a colloquium that gathered all the contributors at the American Association for Applied Linguistics in Toronto in 2015. First and foremost, we thank Diane Larsen-Freeman for her life-time work and caring mentorship and, in particular, for her inspirational contributions to the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics, which this book aspires to honor. Our deep gratitude is also with all the authors, who poured their long friendship with Diane and their sustained commitment to complexity thinking into their chapters. In the preparation leading up to the current form of the book, we benefitted enormously from the consultations generously provided by the following individuals: Dwight Atkinson (University of Arizona), Peter De Costa (Michigan State University), Jan Hulstijn (University of Amsterdam), Ludmila Isurin (The Ohio State University), Merel Keijzer (University of Groningen), Jim Lantolf (The Pennsylvania State University), Patsy Lightbown (Concordia University), Luke Plonsky (Northern Arizona University), Ema Ushioda (University of Warwick), and Henry Widdowson (University of Vienna). We thank Kaylee Fernandez at Teachers College, Columbia University, for her competent assistance with copy-editing. Finally, we are most grateful to Kees Vaes at John Benjamins and to the LL< Book Series editors Nina Spada (University of Toronto) and Nelleke Van Deusen-Scholl (Yale University) for trusting us with the conceptualization of this book and for their patience as we worked to bring it to completion.
It is our distinct privilege to present this volume in honor and celebration of Diane Larsen-Freeman, and we hope readers will enjoy the innovative spirit of all contributions herein as much as we do.
