Attitudes des CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) dans l’option LSF (Langue des Signes Française) au lycée

Résumé
Cette étude examine l’impact de l’enseignement optionnel de la langue des signes française (LSF) au lycée sur les
enfants entendants de parents sourds (CODA). Bien que ces élèves évoluent souvent dans un environnement bilingue, leurs
compétences en LSF varient considérablement, les plaçant à différents degrés d’appartenance à la communauté sourde. L’analyse
repose sur un échantillon de 32 CODA ayant suivi l’option LSF entre 2009 et 2019. Les résultats montrent que la caractéristique
commune des CODA dans ce contexte est le lien familial établi avec la langue et la culture d’héritage indépendamment de
l’acquisition antérieure de la LSF et de l’appartenance à la communauté sourde. En outre, bien que l’option LSF favorise la
reconnaissance de la LSF en tant que langue d’héritage, des ajustements pédagogiques sont nécessaires pour mieux répondre aux
besoins des CODA.

Abstract
The French Sign Language (LSF) option in the French Baccalauréat has enabled hearing students from deaf
families to learn or enhance their heritage language within a formal academic setting. This study highlights how LSF classes at
the high school level promote awareness and appreciation of students’ heritage language and culture, revealing that the defining
feature of heritage signers is the familial bond they maintain with deaf culture and LSF, regardless of prior LSF acquisition or
community affiliation. Additionally, the study presents key pedagogical implications for educators to consider in order to foster
the process of revalorizing and reclaiming heritage sign language catalyzed by these courses.
