Guidelines

Volumes in this series provide a forum for research contributing to theories of language acquisition (first and second, child and adult), language learnability, language attrition and language disorders.

Guidelines for submissions of proposals and manuscripts.
Proposals should be submitted (3 copies) to either of the editors (Roumyana Slabakova/Lydia White) or to Kees Vaes at John Benjamins.

PROPOSALS

If you are planning to write a monograph or to put together an edited volume which you would like to have considered for the LALD series, please provide a proposal covering the issues listed below. If you already have a complete manuscript, do not submit the manuscript. Instead, prepare a proposal along the same lines, making it clear that a manuscript already exists.

Proposals should include: Title, author(s) (include brief CVs), potential audience, proposed length, time frame,etc. Rationale for the volume, including how it relates to/differs from existing literature on the topic and itspotential suitablility for the LALD series. Summary and outline of proposed content. Where possible, include a table of contents. In the case of edited volumes, include abstracts of the individual papers/chapters to be included in the volume.

The editors consider each proposal. In some cases, proposals may also be sent to members of the editorial board for their input. A proposal may be rejected outright or provisionally accepted subject to a final decision based on a review of the complete manuscript.

MANUSCRIPTS AND REVIEWING

Once a proposal has been provisionally accepted, completed manuscripts should be submitted to Kees Vaes at John Benjamins.

Review procedures:

1. Monographs. These are sent out to two experts for review. (Reviewers are normally asked to review the manuscript within 3 months.) The editors then make a joint decision on the basis of the reviewers’ comments. If the decision is to accept the manuscript (or to accept it with revisions), a contract is prepared. If the decision is ‘revise and resubmit’, a decision will not be made until the revised manuscript is received and rereviewed.

2. Volumes of collected papers. (N.B. We believe alternative (b) is more appropriate for edited volumes.)

a. The editor(s) of the volume may choose to submit it like a monograph, in which case, it will be reviewed in the same way (i.e. it will be sent out to two reviewers chosen by the LALD editors who will review thevolume as a whole). The series editors then make a joint decision on the basis of the reviewers’ comments.

b. Alternatively, the editor(s) of the volume can arrange the reviewing themselves. In that case, each chapter in the volume must be reviewed by at least two people. A list of the names of the reviewers must be submitted to the editors of LALD. Final decision rests with the series editors.
