Preparing a book for publication is always a collaborative effort. Edited
volumes like this one require an especially high level of cooperation amongst all
involved. This book is the product of many hands, and the editors wish to thank
those who have been involved in seeing it through to fruition.
Our first debt is to our authors for their thought-provoking scholarly
contributions to this volume and their continuous collaboration with us while
finalising the book. The scholars whose work is included in this volume are at the
forefront of some of the most exciting new developments in stylistics today. We are
grateful for the opportunity to showcase their research between the covers of this
book.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the many speakers who took part in the
LAND-SIG special interest group sessions on the stylistics of landscape, place and
environment at the 2016 and 2017 international conferences of the Poetics And
Linguistics Association (PALA). It was largely as a result of the inspirational
exchange of ideas during these sessions that the plan for this book arose in the
first place. We are also thankful to the conference organisers for allowing us to
host the LAND-SIGs during these conferences.
For their confidence in this project and their unfailing support, we also
want to thank the series editors of the Linguistic Approaches to
Literature series, Sonia Zyngier and Joanna Gavins. This book was
longer in the making than any of us intended, but you stuck with us. Thanks also to
Kees Vaes and Esther Roth, and John Benjamins Publishing Company for making this
series – and this book – possible.
