Our first thanks go to Ans herself, whose 60th birthday provided the inspiration for this book. This book would not have come into being if it had not been for Ans’ own work on English historical syntax, as well as her dedication to mentoring early career scholars – it was this appreciation that inspired colleagues and collaborators to contribute a chapter.
