Japanese students’ management processes and their acquisition of English academic competence during study abroad

This paper deals with Japanese students who enroll in a postgraduate program at an Australian university. Using
the language management model, I analyse the types of difficulties they experience in the English academic context in terms
of deviations from the norm, and then examine the various types of adjustment processes through which they develop their
English academic competence.
