Abstract
This work starts from the analysis of the arguments used by Professor Modest Prats in the famous
Ignatian Meditation on linguistic normalization that he published at the end of the 80s,
regarding the future of Catalan. It contrasts the warnings and dark forecast included in that text, controversial and
much discussed at the time, with the experienced evolution by the sociolinguistic situation in Catalonia in recent
decades, and with the data provided by the latest Survey of Language Uses of the Population, carried out in 2023. The
article closes with a series of reflections on the complicated and disturbing, but still reversible in the author’s
opinion, current situation of the Catalan language.
