Abstract
Catalan is a constitutive language of Northern Catalonia, that is, it is a language that emerged from the evolution of Vulgar Latin in these counties in the High Middle Ages. However, in 1700, after the incorporation of these territories into the France kingdom, king Louis xiv officially banned Catalan (for the first time): he condemned the formal use of this language, which was “repulsive” and contrary to the “French Nation”. Thus began a long process of linguistic substitution and transculturation that continues to this day.
The French State — in its different forms of government: monarchies, republics, empire — imposed an allochthonous language on the former Catalan counties under its jurisdiction through all kinds of prohibitions on the use of Catalan, as well as with the extension of compulsory, secular and free education exclusively in French, among others.
The objective, therefore, is to analyze the loss of the primordial language in Northern Catalonia today based on the latest available survey: Enquesta d’usos lingüístics a la Catalunya del Nord (EULCN 2015)
