Abstract
The translation workshop of the Centre de recherche sur l’Espagne contemporaine (CREC EA 2292 — Université Sorbonne Nouvelle) has chosen to translate a sainete (El amigo Melquíades o por la boca muere el pez by Carlos Arniches) because this specific form of Spanish drama combines several difficulties, including omnipresent humor. A collective translation was advocated, insisting on the staging and voice of the text.
Experience shows that translating humor is always possible, accepting that translation is not limited to strict literalism. By using transpositions, shifting certain comic effects, respecting the intentions of the text, it is possible to achieve a faithful translation that will make audiences laugh a century later.
