Abstract
The aim of the study is to determine the transfer possibilities of cultural references in the voice-over translation of multilingual films into Lithuanian. The corpus consists of cultural references from five multilingual films, which were systematised according to the translation process. The comparative-descriptive combination of methods used in this qualitative pilot study leads to the following findings. Cultural references are generally described as either linguistic or extralinguistic. In relation to translation in film — as mono-, trans- or infracultural. An inconsistent rendering of multilingualism is observed. In dialogues with more than two languages, rare languages are neglected unless there are partial subtitles in a dominant language. Four translation procedures have proven to be predominant: the direct transfer of cultural references, omission, hyperonymic transfer and substitution.
