Los antropónimos en la película cubana Los dioses rotos

This paper examines the fictional anthroponymy of characters in the Cuban film Los dioses rotos (2008), considering the English translation of these anthroponyms in the subtitles. To achieve this, a thorough visualization (filmic, linguistic, and translational) of the film has been conducted, extracting all anthroponyms related to main and secondary characters, as well as those mentioned in the plot’s dialogues. The close ties between characters and Afro-Cuban religion, along with the phonetic and mnemonic peculiarities of female anthroponyms in the realm of prostitution, are evident. In the subtitles, the decision to preserve Cuban characters’ anthroponyms, respecting the orthography of the target language, is notable. The preference for using full names instead of diminutive names in subtitling, are highlighted.
