Abstract
The main objective of this study is to examine the translation of culture-bound references (CBRs) in the
Lithuanian-dubbed film “Coco” (Unkrich and Molina 2017). Employing a three-step
methodology, the research first identifies prevalent translation procedures for CBRs and their correlation with semantic
categories. Subsequently, it assesses the factors influencing translator decisions and evaluates dubbing synchronization,
exploring reasons behind specific translation choices. The analysis of “Coco” identified 451 distinct CBRs, with sociocultural
references being the most prevalent. The majority of CBRs were preserved in the Lithuanian version of the film to maintain a
rich representation of Mexican culture, as well as isochrony and lip synchronization when characters were seen on-screen.
