Abstract
Contrary to what Calderini claimed in a famous article,
engyesis cannot be found in the Greek novel, let alone
in Heliodorus of Emesa, except as a remnant of an institution that in the
Hellenistic world had lost its original meaning. Unlike the New Comedy, we
do not find the phraseology that was to be pronounced but merely slight
traces of the original terminology.
Keywords: engyesis, betrothal, law of marriage, Attic law, Hellenistic law, Greek novel, Heliodorus
