Abstract
Scholars who reflect upon language policy proposals that respect the speakers of minoritized languages warn that in order to achieve this goal we must not copy the mechanisms that have led to language repression, i.e. the mechanisms of the nation-state. It is necessary to overcome the narrow vision imposed by national ideology. One of these proposals, based on what could be called the multiform nature of the linguistic facts, denounces the rigidity of the categories that are used to justify language oppression and claims to take into account the diverse and personal nature of communication and the infinite variety of the linguistic forms of today’s society: hybrids, fusions, permeability of boundaries, fragmentation. However, these dismantled categories are probably the same that might ground language policies in favor of minoritized languages. The simple discourse about language diversity and personal choices can be brilliant, but perhaps inoperative: it is just a discourse of angels.
