Terminology training in a multilingual setting
The Luxembourgish case

Abstract
Luxembourg is a multilingual nation with Luxembourgish, French, and German as official
languages, reflected in an education system where primary and secondary students engage with scientific topics
exclusively in German or French. Luxembourgish remains underused as scientific language due to uncertainties about its
necessity and researchers’ perceptions of its value. While linguistic institutions exist, a key challenge in
Luxembourgish terminology developing is the lack of systematic planning to standardize and effectively manage
terminologies across fields. The three case studies presented highlight the focus on basic terminology training over
extensive planning, with most research conducted in German, French, or English. Promoting Luxembourgish in scientific
domains requires creating new terms and ensuring their adoption and practical application within the community.
