Abstract
This article examines the process of terminology planning performed institutionally in Catalonia
since 1985. Thus, it places the Catalan language in a broader plan that
encourages its usage within a wide sphere of communication and expression. Furthermore, although the main focus is on
the official Catalan terminological work, it also describes some of the terminological activities carried out before
the institutionalisation of terminology. The terminological activity is extended into other essential aspects, such
as: the terminological production resulting from the involvement of universities and other bodies in standardising
Catalan; the idea and process of a singular work in a field with specific needs and objectives, for language that
requires the terminology to be complete; and, for terminology training provided by universities.
