Résumé

Cette contribution est constituée par la présentation et la traduction des premières pages du Kitāb al-’Usūl fī l-nahw, dans lesquelles Ibn al-Sarrāj, grammairien de Baghdad du IVe/Xe siècle, définit les trois sortes de mots dont se compose la langue arabe: le nom, l’opération (= le verbe) et la particule. Dans ces définitions, très différentes de celles des premiers grammairiens, on relève une influence très nette de la logique aristotélicienne. Adoptées et transmises par les élèves d’Ibn al-Sarrāj, ces définitions prévaudront, par la suite, chez la plupart des grammairiens arabes.

Summary

The paper presents the first pages of the Kitāb al-’Usul fī l-nahw by the grammarian Ibn al-Sarrāj, who lived in Bagdad in the 4th/10th century, in which the author defines three kinds of words of which he believes Arabic is composed: the noun, the ‘operation’ (i.e., the verb), and the particle. In the definitions of these three concepts one can discover the influence of Aristotelian logic, quite different from earlier grammatical treatises in Arabic scholarship. These definitions, which were adopted and transmitted by Ibn al-Sar-raj’s students, became widespread among Arab grammarians from that time onwards. A translation into French of the pages in question is appended.
