Contextualising Baxtin’s Linguistic Ideas

This article discusses the origins and formation of the notion of ‘metalinguistics’ in Mixail Mixajlovič Baxtin’s (1895–1975) writings. It is argued that the discussion of metalinguistics and the division of labour within the study of language in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s may have exerted a more profound influence on the formation of Baxtin’s linguistic views than was previously thought. The article investigates the nature and extent of this interaction and shows that there are interesting parallels between Baxtin’s conception of metalinguistics and the metalinguistics writings of George L. Trager (1906–1992). This suggests that, apart from any purely terminological influence, the way in which Baxtin defined the scope of his metalinguistics as a specific discipline separate from linguistics may have been inspired by the writings of the American structuralists.

Cet article examine les origines et la formation de la notion de ‘métalinguistique’ dans les écrits de Mikhaïl Mixaïlovič Bakhtine (1895–1975). L’argument est que la discussion de la métalinguistique et de la division du travail dans l’étude du langage aux États-Unis dans les années 1940 et 1950 peuvent avoir exercé une influence plus profonde sur la formation de points de vue linguistiques de Bakhtine que l’on ne pensait autrefois. L’article examine la nature et l’ampleur de cette interaction et montre qu’il y a des parallèles intéressants entre la conception bakhtinienne de la métalinguistique et les écrits sur la métalinguistique de George L. Trager (1906–1992). Ceci suggère que, en dehors de toute influence purement terminologique, la manière dont Bakhtine a défini la portée de sa métalinguistique comme discipline spécifique distincte de la linguistique peut avoir été inspirée par les écrits des structuralistes américains.

Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Herkunft und der Entwicklung des Begriffs ‘Metalinguistik’ in den Schriften von Michail Michajlovič Bachtin (1895–1975). Es wird gezeigt, dass die Diskussion zur Metalinguistik und die Aufgabenteilung innerhalb der Sprachwissenschaft in den USA in den 40er und 50er Jahren einen größeren Einfluss auf die Entwicklung von Bachtins linguistischen Ansichten hatten als bisher angenommen. Der Artikel untersucht die Art und den Umfang dieses Einflusses und zeigt interessante Parallelen zwischen Bachtins Auffassung von Metalinguistik und den metalinguistischen Schriften von George L. Trager (1906–1992). Diese Beobachtung legt den Schluss nahe, dass die amerikanischen Strukturalisten nicht nur rein terminologische Einflüsse auf Bachtins Werk hatten, sondern dass sie Bachtin überhaupt den Anstoß dazu gaben, die Metalinguistik als eine eigene Disziplin außerhalb der Linguistik zu verstehen.
