Intertextual unity in the Franciscan Friar Juan Baptista de Lagunas’s opus of 1574

The grammar, dictionary, and religious texts by Friar Juan Baptista de Lagunas (c.1530–1604) are three works that the author conceived as complementary and published within one cover (1574). Nevertheless, the content of each book is rather different in the theme developed and the influences that oriented its realization. The works of the French Franciscan monk Maturino Gilberti (c.1498–1585) had a great impact on all three texts; the Arte in particular. Lagunas’ dictionary, however, follows Ambrogio Calepino (c.1435–1511), while his doctrinal texts are guided by Catholic religious teachings. Furthermore, each of the three texts has its own pagination. Despite these details, the unity of the three texts as one single volume can be shown by the textual coherence achieved through the cross-references between them and by the printing decisions taken at the moment of production, both factors that strengthen the argument supporting the intertextual unity of Lagunas’ oeuvre.

La grammaire, le dictionnaire et les textes religieux de Frère Juan Baptista de Lagunas (vers 1530–1604) sont trois ouvrages que leur auteur a conçus comme complémentaires et publiés en un seul volume (1574). Néanmoins, le contenu de chaque livre diffère d’une fançon significative quant au thème développé et aux influences ayant orienté leur réalisation. Les ouvrages du moine franciscain français Maturino Gilberti (vers 1498–1585) ont eu un grand impact sur ces trois textes, le Arte en particulier. Le dictionnaire de Laguna, cependant, suit Ambrogio Calepino (vers 1435–1511), tandis que ses textes doctrinaux sont guidés par les enseignements religieux catholiques. En outre, chacun de ces trois textes a sa propre pagination. En dépit de ces détails, l’unité des trois textes sous forme d’un seul et même volume peut être démontrée par la cohérence textuelle résultant des références croisées entre eux et par les décisions typographiques prises au moment de la production, deux facteurs qui renforcent l’argument de l’unité intertextuelle de l’œuvre de Lagunas.

Die Grammatik, das Wörterbuch und die religiösen Texte des Fray Juan Baptista de Lagunas (c.1530–1604) sind drei Werke, die der Autor als zusammengehörig angesehen hatte und die von ihm deshalb 1574 in einem Band publiziert wurden. Nichtsdestoweniger sind die Inhalte der Teilbände recht unterschiedlich, was die jeweilige Thematik und die sie orientierenden Quellen anbelangt. Die Schriften des französischen Franziskaners Maturino Gilberti (c.1498–1585) übten besondere Wirkung besonders auf den grammatischen Teil aus. Mit seinem Wörterbuch orientierte sich Lagunas hingegen an Ambrogio Calepino (c.1435–1511). Zu vermerken ist fernerhin, dass jeder der drei Texte eine eigene Paginierung aufweist. Trotzdem kann ein innerer Zusammenhang aufgrund der Kohärenz der zwischen ihnen existierenden Querverweise nachgewiesen werden; auch die bei der Drucklegung getroffenen Beschlüsse verweisen in dieselbe Richtung und unterstreichen damit die innere Einheit von Lagunas ɶuvre.
